St. John's expands endoscopy services with new center
June 20, 2002
St. John's Health System has expanded its outpatient endoscopy services and will host an open house 3-5 p.m., Thursday, June 27, in the Whiteside Medical Building at 2115 S. Fremont.
"We were needing additional suites to provide for patient volume in the health center and Smith-Glynn-Callaway endoscopy," said Lynn Smith, director of endoscopy services. "The additional rooms are meeting the needs for outpatient procedures and are assisting patients with maximum privacy, comfort and easier access."
St. John's Regional Health Center will continue to house an inpatient/interventional endoscopy unit. Patients in the hospital and the Whiteside endoscopy center are allowed more time for recovery and family members are with them during the evaluation and recovery period. The additional suites also increase capacity to provide colon cancer screenings, which are important for early detection.
"We were very fortunate that in our planning phase, St. John's Auxiliary recognized that we were improving patient access and satisfaction and they chose us as their annual fund-raising recipient," Smith said. "St. John's Auxiliary presented us with a gift of $225,000 which allowed us to fully equip a fifth video room and have state-of-the-art equipment booms in each procedure room providing better physician and nurse viewing, easier patient movement and positions more of the essential functions at the bedside."
"We have eight physicians who are board-certified in gastroenterology, that have combined their practices from Regional Pulmonary and Gastroenterology Associates and Smith-Glynn-Callaway Gastroenterology and relocated to Whiteside," said Kaye Jarrell, clinic administrator for Digestive Health Specialists.
The specialists are Drs. Donald Nelson, Donald Mangum, Donald Thompson, Jesse Taylor, Roy Libel, David Geier, Michael Wooten and Alex Hover. Nurse Practitioner Karen Nelson has also joined the staff.
"Having the physicians in suite 3300 with 16 examination rooms and the capability of seeing patients for procedures in the endoscopy center, suite 1300, has been very advantageous for our patients and referring physicians," Jarrell said.
