St. John’s St. Francis Co-worker team begins fundraising for Relay for Life
Jan. 27, 2005

St. John’s St. Francis Hospital Co-worker team raised more than $5,000 last year to rank them in the Gold Sponsorship level at the 10th Annual Relay for Life. This year the relay will be held in Mountain View in June and the hospital team has formed and plans to raise even more this year.

Amy Smotherman, team captain, explained more. “We formed a team with hospital co-workers and their families and will work together to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Annual Relay for Life.

“This year the relay will be held Friday, June 3 from 7 p.m. until Saturday, June 4 at 7 a.m. We are excited about the fundraising opportunities we are planning and would like to invite everyone to participate,” she stated.

St. John’s St. Francis has participated with a team for the past five years and has been proud to raise money to help the fight against cancer. “Unfortunately, everyone has probably had some dealing with cancer. Whether a close loved one or a family friend has been diagnosed with the disease, cancer comes in many different forms and affects individuals differently,” she explained. “Through the American Cancer Society Research, advances are made daily to assist those with various forms of cancer and work is done to eliminate cancer in many people throughout the year.

“Relay for Life is just one way we as individuals can make a difference. The hospital team has many fundraisers planned throughout the spring and we ask and hope for your participation as we raise money in the fight against cancer,” Smotherman said.

Some of the fundraising campaigns at the hospital include a baby photo contest; a spare change drive with the department with the most money kissing a pig at the end of the contest; and a basket auction. “We did this last year where each department created a theme basket and then we held a silent auction. Baskets included a pet basket, Americana basket, chocolate basket and many others,” she said. “Watch for more information about a specific date for the basket auction.”

If you or your business is interested in making a donation to the St. John’s St. Francis Relay for Life Team to benefit the American Cancer Society, please call Amy Smotherman at 417-934-7090.
