St. John's Medical Research Group announces diabetic gastrophy study
October 22, 2004
St. John's Medical
Research and Dr. Gregory Ledger are participating in a nationwide
research study for an often unrecognized condition know as diabetic
gastropathy. Diabetic gastropathy is characterized by an early sense
of fullness with eating, mid to upper abdominal pain or discomfort,
bloating, and possible nausea or vomiting.
The research program will determine whether the
investigational medication, currently approved for another condition, is
effective in treating the symptoms of diabetic gastropathy.
Qualified individuals must be between 18 and 65 years old, have either
type 1 or type 2 diabetes for the past three years and require insulin
therapy. In addition, study participants must have experienced
symptoms of diabetic gastropathy for at least 2 months prior to study
entry. It is estimated that nearly 50% of patients with type 1
diabetes and 30% with type 2 diabetes have symptoms of diabetic
gastropathy. However, most individuals with diabetes do not realize
that their stomach problems could be related to their diabetes.
Diabetic gastropathy not only causes significant discomfort, but can also
produce unpredictable and inconsistent blood sugar levels.
Patients who are eligible and join this study may gain access to a
research treatment for this disease and help others by participating in
medical research. Study participants will also receive study-related:
medical care, study medication, laboratory services, glucose monitoring
supplies and diabetic and nutritional counseling all at no cost.
For more information and to see if you
qualify for the study, please contact Dr. Gregory Ledger at 417-841-0250
or 1-800-909-TEAM.
