bariatric surgery program named center of excellence

St. John’s Bariatric Surgery Program has
been named a Center of Excellence. It is the sixth Missouri program
to achieve that designation from the National Surgery Review corporation. A
center of excellence holds the highest level of efficacy, efficiency, and
safety in a bariatric program, and those locations are among the most
comprehensive and multi-disciplinary surgical weight loss programs.

expands St. John’s Cancer Center
April 18, 2008
St.
John’s Foundation for Community Health announced a major gift from the
O’Reilly family for expansion of cancer services. In recognition of the
donation, St. John’s Cancer Center has been named “St. John’s C.H. 'Chub’
O’Reilly Cancer Center." The announcement came at a donor recognition dinner
April 12 celebrating the opening of St. John’s new Patient Tower.

Cigna Healthcare
announces contract with St. John's Health System

Cigna
Healthcare has announced a contract with St. John’s Health System, effective
July 15, 2008. Cigna has indicated that this agreement will cover 18,000
people in southwest Missouri. The contract will extend St. John’s services
to local residents of all Cigna’s insurance plans. Residents covered by
these plans will become eligible to use any St. John’s hospitals and
physicians.

Fred McQueary, M.D.,
named St. John's Clinic president
Feb. 6, 2008
Fred McQueary, M.D., St. John’s Clinic orthopedic surgeon, has been named
St. John’s Clinic Springfield Division President. He was chosen from a field
of candidates after a nationwide search that began last May. He replaces
Walter J. Gaska, M.D., who is transitioning into the role of president
emeritus.

St. John’s Clinic receives spirit
of excellence award

St. John’s Clinic Force for Good has been chosen as the winner of the 15th
annual Modern Healthcare Magazine Community Spirit of Excellence Award. The
Spirit of Excellence award honors organizations and individuals that go
beyond what is expected in serving their patients and communities. As a
winner, St. John’s Clinic will receive a cash prize of $5,000 that will be
put back into the Force for Good.

Transitional Care Unit christens Patient
Tower
Dec. 7, 2007
The Transitional Care Unit, formerly 5J
and 5K, was the first unit to move into the new Patient Tower on Nov. 27.
The unit is now on 7A.
“It was challenging,” said Nursing
Director Judy Matthews, BSN. “But I think I have the best staff in the
hospital. We’re a close-knit group and we’ve been through moves before, so
that helped. We also got incredible support from practically every
department in the hospital.”
In the days prior to the move, staff met
with patients and family members, who had a chance to view the room their
relative would be moving to.

St. John's Burn Center offers fire safety tips
Oct. 26, 2007
The risk of fire is present throughout the year; however, fire experts say the
danger is at its highest during the winter months. About 250 people a year are
hospitalized at St. John’s Burn Center due to fire and burn-related injuries.
Burns are the number two cause of pediatric trauma admission to St. John’s
Hospital, behind only motor vehicle crashes.

birth announcement distribution

Springfield and Lebanon will no longer send birth announcements to area
newspapers beginning this week. The move is meant to help prevent potential
home infant abductions.

area students
Oct. 15, 2007
St. John's nurses will be onsite at Springfield Catholic, Ava and
Republic schools Oct. 15 - 31, 2007 to provide the FluMist intranasal flu
vaccine to students. Organizers hope that by providing the pain-free vaccine
at school, more children will be immunized.

2100 turn out for annual St. John's Sunshine Run at Hammons Field
Oct. 13, 2007
Approximately 2100 people turned out Saturday, Oct. 13 for the 28th
Annual St. John's Sunshine Run at Hammons Field - about 400 more than last
year. Good weather helped attendance for the races, which included 10K, 5K
and 1-mile events.

John’s Clinic finalizes plans for new Rolla clinic

St.
John’s Clinic will break ground in December for a three-story Clinic
facility in Rolla to serve patients in the Phelps, Pulaski, Dent, Crawford,
Maries and Texas county region. The 108,000 square-foot facility will be
built on a 25-acre tract of land off Martin Spring Drive, just east of
Zeno’s Motel and Steakhouse in the 1600 block.
