First, a comprehensive examination/consultation by an inter-disciplinary
team is performed to identify pain triggers and primary sources of pain. It
may include board-certified pain specialist consultation. Other diagnostics
may include:
¢ MRI, EMG
or other diagnostic testing.
¢
Visits with and evaluations by a nurse practitioner, registered nurse
specialist, physical therapist and a psychologist specializing in chronic
pain.
¢
Spinal nerve block and epidural steroid injections epidural.
¢ Discogram
and other diagnostic blocks.
¢
Radiofrequency procedures that temporarily burn the painful nerve messenger
to the brain.
¢ Intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET),
which heats the collagen around the disc to reform properly.
¢ Nucleoplasty,
which aspirates the nucleus of the spinal disc.
¢
Trigger point injections.
¢ Implantable devices such as a spinal cord stimulator or intrathecal
infusion pump.
¢ Other pain procedures with option of conscious sedation.
Physical Therapy
¢
Kinesiology: learning to move without pain and fear.
¢
Pacing.
¢
Stabilizing the skeleton with core muscles.
¢
Diaphragmatic breathing.
¢
Ergonomics and proper posture.
¢ Pool therapy.
Psychological Services
¢
Coping skills training.
¢
Relaxation training.
¢
Hypnosis.
¢
Biofeedback.
¢ Eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR).
¢ Individual and group counseling.
¢
Disability Prevention Evening Program: This program is especially designed
for full-time workers and students and includes stress management education,
relaxation and coping skills training and group sessions. A Behavioral
Health evaluation is not required for participation in this program.
¢
Intensive Pain Program: This program includes group therapy with coping
skills classes, relaxation training classes, and group psychotherapy. Be
prepared to devote six hours, two days per week for four weeks in this
program.
One hour each day is devoted to group lecture
on physical movement and understanding the pain cycle. One hour each day is
devoted to pool therapy or weight room strengthening, as tolerated. This
program also includes lifestyle education and self-management strategies.
Participation in this program includes
transportation within the Springfield city limits, complementary Hospitality
House overnight stay for those traveling in from out of town, a lunch
voucher and Social Services assistance.
All pain management treatment plans are
individually designed to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs
of the individual. Variations and progression of the plan may change to best

Education
Pain management services may not effectively eliminate all pain.
Empowering patients and their families with resources and tools to
self-manage pain can help individuals regain quality of life.
