Fall 2004
News in Brief
St. John's Clinic chosen as Press Ganey “Patient Satisfaction Success
Story of the Year”
St. John's Clinic has been chosen as one of the 2004 Success Story winners
by Press Ganey, a research company which is the health care industry's
leading independent vendor of satisfaction measurement and improvement.
Six winners were chosen from among 122 submissions, which included
hospitals and clinics. St. John's Clinic was the only physician clinic
chosen.
Press Ganey evaluates more than 8 million patient satisfaction surveys
each year. Ratings for St. John's Clinic were calculated through surveys
mailed to patients and returned directly to Press Ganey for scoring. St.
John's Clinic ranks No. 2 compared with 60 clinics in their peer group of
organizations with more than 100 providers. Included in that group are
other prestigious physician clinics such as Drake University Health
System, Yale Medical Group, Robert Wood Johnson Medical Group and
Georgetown University. St. John's Clinic also ranks in the top 40 of all
280 clinics, including 15,222 physicians, evaluated by Press Ganey.
Success Story contest winners will have the opportunity to present their
stories at Press Ganey's National Client Conference in Chicago in
November.
"Caring for our patients in a kind and compassionate manner is a top
priority at St. John's Clinic. We have created an exceptional health care
environment where all individuals are respected and committed to providing
outstanding, compassionate health care and excellent service," says Donn
Sorensen, St. John's Clinic chief operating officer.
St. John's Cancer Center recognized by American College of Surgeons
St. John's Cancer Center has been designated an approved cancer program by
the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. Only one in
four hospitals that treat cancer patients receive this special
designation.
Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1932, the Approvals
Program sets standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to
ensure they comply to those standards. Recognizing that cancer is a
complex group of diseases, the program promotes consultation among
surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, diagnostic
radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists. This
multidisciplinary cooperation results in improved patient care.
Receiving care at a Commission on Cancer-approved cancer program ensures a
patient will have access to:
• Quality care close to home;
• Comprehensive care offering a range of state-of-the-art services and
equipment;
• A multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
available to cancer patients;
• Information about cancer clinical trials, education and support;
• Lifelong patient follow-up through a cancer registry that collects data
on type and stage of cancers and treatment results;
• Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care.
Approval is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed
to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer and to undergo a
rigorous evaluation process and a review of its performance. Approved
cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years. This
recognition includes three-year approval with accommodation – the highest
level available by the commission.

Yale Eye Center surgeon brings expertise to Ozarks
Shachar Tauber, M.D., joined St. John’s Clinic – Eye Specialists in
September. Tauber specializes in LASIK, laser vision correction and
corneal and external disease. He is accepting patients for LASIK, advanced
surface ablation, LASIK with CustomCornea, other laser vision correction
procedures, as well as medical and surgical treatment of corneal and
external disease. Tauber comes to St. John’s from the Yale Eye Center,
where he was medical director and one of the first surgeons in the world
to be accredited to implant the AlphaCor artificial cornea to aid
vision-impaired patients throughout southern New England. The AlphaCor
Artificial Cornea is designed to replace a diseased or damaged cornea or
failed human graft. Its dimensions, flexibility and optics allow it to be
implanted, and to perform, in a similar manner to a donor corneal graft.
Tauber brings to St John’s his extensive expertise in the field of
refractive surgery and laser vision correction. He is nationally and
internationally recognized as a laser vision correction surgeon, and for
his comprehensive research and teaching in refractive surgery and corneal
and external disease.
He received his undergraduate degree from Washington University, St. Louis
in 1983. In 1992, he obtained his M.D. from Tulane School of Medicine, and
went on to complete his residency there.
For the past seven years, Tauber has been medical director for the
Yale-New Haven Eye Laser Center. He was also an assistant professor of
ophthalmology and visual science at Yale, and the director of cornea,
external diseases, contact lens and refractive surgery. During that time,
he was actively involved in clinical research and teaching related to
refractive and cornea surgery. He continues to serve on the executive
board of faculty advisors for Unite for Sight, a non-profit global
humanitarian organization that tackles eye and health care issues
throughout
the world.

St. John's Clinic donates over $40,000 to Springfield PTA Clothing Bank
St. John's Clinic presented a check for over $40,000 to Springfield PTA
Clothing Bank on Aug. 10, 2004 at Bailey Education Center, 501 W. Central
Ave.
The Springfield PTA Clothing Bank offers students and their younger
preschool siblings the opportunity to shop for new and good quality used
clothing. Children in the Springfield Public School System who qualify for
the free or reduced-priced lunch program also qualify for this program.
"These children may not otherwise have the means to purchase appropriate
clothing for school and other activities," explains Donn Sorensen, St.
John's Clinic senior vice president and chief operating officer. "We hope
this will help them feel better about themselves and encourage them to
have good attendance."
"We are fortunate in Springfield to have so many community agencies that
support our efforts," says Jack Ernst, Springfield Public Schools
superintendent." Special thanks to
St. John's Clinic for their extraordinary donation to the clothing bank."
This is the latest project in an initiative called the "Force for Good"
and involves harnessing the good will, resources and leadership of St.
John's Clinic to benefit those in need. The Force for Good committee is
led by 18 physicians and two clinic senior managers.
Last December, St. John's Clinic raised approximately $17,000 and
collected three cargo vans full of food, clothing, gifts and supplies for
The Kitchen.

St. John’s Home Care offers variety of services
November’s National Home Health Month provides the opportunity to
recognize the professionals who care for our loved ones in their homes.
St. John’s Home Care offers a variety of solutions to meet in-home health
care needs, such as durable medical equipment (DME), hospice care and
private duty nursing that ease the stress families face when caring for a
loved one.
St. John’s Home Care professionals say that knowing the options and
planning ahead are the keys to getting quality in-home care for loved
ones.
Their tips for selecting a home health provider include:
• Talking with your insurance provider to make sure you understand what
services are covered by your policy and for how long.
• Talking with your health care provider to find out exactly what type of
care your loved one will require – is it personal and homemaker care; is
it nursing care or is it both?
• Asking your physician or nurse for referrals to quality home health
service providers. Check with friends and family members who have used
such a service and find out if they were pleased with the quality of care
they received.
• Conducting personal interviews with two or three of the providers and
asking for referrals from recent customers.
