Bariatric surgery involves performing specific operations on the stomach and/or small intestines to reduce the amount of food and the number of calories needed to produce the feeling of fullness.

St. John's physicians perform both Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and adjustable gastric banding using minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. You and your surgeon will work together to determine which procedure is right for you.

Gastric Banding

During gastric banding, your surgeon will place an adjustable band around the upper part of your stomach.

This will allow you to have a feeling of fullness very early in the meal so that less food is needed.

The band can be adjusted in your surgeon's office by increasing or decreasing the amount of fluid in the band using a small needle. These adjustments are tailored to each patient's individual weight loss needs.

Gastric Bypass

During gastric bypass, the stomach is divided and part of it is made into a small pouch, which causes an early feeling of fullness when eating. Gastric bypass has the added benefit of decreasing the amount of absorption that occurs by bypassing the lower stomach and a certain part of the intestines.

Both the banding and bypass procedures are combined with comprehensive education and support programs to help you achieve the highest levels of success with your procedure.
